Overall objectives:
  • The project aimed to utilise modified Finetech implants to investigate the use of neuromodulation, low level electrical stimulation, of the sacral nerve roots as a treatment for spasticity in spinal cord injured patients.
  • The aim was to have developed a full prototype device with regulatory approval by the end of the two year project.
Our objectives:
  • Gain an understanding of the effectiveness of neuromodulation as a means of treating spasticity in spinal cord injured patients with a view to potentially incorporating such a program into future bladder stimulator systems.
Our achievements:
  • Better understanding of neuromodulation as a treatment for spasticity.
  • Guidance as to appropriate stimulation parameters for neuromodulation.
Project information:
  • MedLINK and EPSRC funded project.
  • 3 partners, all in the UK.
  • £250k project fund.
  • Duration: 24 months.
