FineTech
Medical Ltd is first to receive CE Mark for an Implanted Drop Foot
Stimulator.
On 23rd
November, 2004, FineTech Medical became the first company to receive
the CE mark for an implanted dropped foot stimulator, the STIMuSTEP™
, to help people who have difficulty walking following a stroke.
The
STIMuSTEP™ is an implanted two channel neuro-muscular stimulator
that has been developed to correct the effect of a dropped foot
following a stroke. Originally designed in conjunction with
the University of Twente, Roessingh Research and Development and
Medisch Spectrum Hospital in The Netherlands , FineTech Medical
has, with assistance from Salisbury District Hospital , further
developed this stimulator into a commercially available product.
The
device consists of a small implant, an external controller, and
a heel-strike sensor. The implant is based on FineTech Medical's
well proven and reliable technology originally developed by the
MRC Neurological Prosthesis Unit in London . The implant receives
energy to stimulate the nerves through the skin from the lightweight
controller worn over the site of the implant. The stimulation cycle
is triggered by the sensor which is placed in the user's shoe.
The stimulator
implant targets the two branches of the common peroneal nerve at
the point where they split just below the knee. The deep branch
controls the muscles that lift the foot (dorsiflex) and turn the
foot inward (inversion), while the superficial branch affects the
muscles that turn the foot outwards (eversion). The stimulation
parameters for each branch can be set independently, thus allowing
the clinician to customise the STIMuSTEP™ to give as natural a walking
gait as possible.
